Liberation Theology
o Comes from latin
o The theory came after the practice
o Things change because of the shortage of priests in the 50/60s
o Like to emphasis passages of the bible that speak about gods love
They get criticised for picking and choosing only certain passages
o Classical theology
Deeper understaidng of god and what he reps, and focused on individual life
overcoming sin and leading to repentance and trying to aspire holiness in
people
You have your set truths and defend those truths
o Liberal theology
Stresses the need for Christian to fight for a just society and social justice
Focus was on human beings and not the church
They r open to transformation and theology must be geared to changing society
They are open to reinterpretation and self critique
Boff criticises that there is an emphasis on change rather than following a
certain set of rules
Its influenced by marxs and so Marxist is used
Vatican steps in and tries to fix liberation theology
It never splits form the catholic church
Liberation theology never challenges the authority of the catholic church
It doesn’t involve itself in challenging ideas because they don’t want
thei focus to leave from the attn of the poor
Catholic church says:
They reject Marxism because of its recourse to violence and doctrine to
class warfare
There must be solidarity between poor with poor and poor with rich
Against their use of scripture and their tendancy of only the passages
that focus on social justice; they say god was concerned with not only
those who are materially poor but spiritually poor too
Base ecclesial communities
o Emphasis on bible reading
o Increasing literacy
o Also coming into a deeper understanding of purpose and how to improve economic and
political situation; not just about doing spirituality but politics too
o Coming up with ideas of improvement
o One thing that comes out of this is that the catholic churchs wants the peasants to
identify with chrsitanity and jesus
They start having unique readings of the bible and emphasis jesus love for the
poor; and the fact that jesus was poor; they highlight these passages in bible
