Document Summary
Manuscript is assembled out of a sequence of smaller units( gatherings). A scribe or illuminator worked on a single gathering at a time. Rub the paper and parchment with pumice and chalk. Hair side touch hair side can avoid the whole book cruel one side. Manuscripts were written by hand with quill pens. Pen was held between middle and forefinger and steadied with thumb, so that the pen met the page vertically. Scribe held pen in right hand, knife in left hand. Scribes added catchwords to avoid confusing the order if gatherings. Scribe added a row of discreet dots under the incorrect word or phrase. Illuminations were produced after the text was supplied. Each color was applied and the black outlines were the final touch. Hierarchy might be made apparent through size, color, attention to detail, location on the page. Features of manuscripts: fore edge: the part of the page away form the spine.
