Document Summary
Soc101h1 lec#2 learning the rules: culture & socialization. Strike at the canadian hearing society is about culture (globe and mail, apr 2, 2017) 4 different kinds of clients, each a different group that views the condition in a different way. Medical model is competing with the social services model. Wanted chs to embrace a social-services model when dealing with deafness, not a medical model of disability: want everyone to treat deafness as a lifestyle, rather than disability. Key insight: cultures are non-rational there are no right/wrong/better/worse cultural values: throwback to colonialism when europeans viewed native cultures are primitive, etc. Viewing these individuals as less advanced, forward and moral. When people behave in odd ways, it is usually because they are members of a different culture than our own. Notion that we cannot evaluate cultures on a metric scale i. e. cannot say that we do things right, others do it wrong, etc. Cannot study cultures empirically in this way.
