Document Summary
Overview of lecture: we will do an overview of different sociological approaches to understanding immigrant integration. Transnationalism approach (1) assimilation approach o o o o o o o o o. In 2005, a toronto research based firm did a survey of 1000 randomly selected canadians. They found that despite the idea of multiculturalism in canada, 70% of people said that new immigrants should assimilate to canadian life. 20% said that new immigrants should balance both their canadian identity and their sustained culture from home. Thus, they found support for the idea of assimilation, which has been the predominant view of how immigrants should integrate. It basically says that when a new group comes in, eventually, by participating in canadian society, they will integrate and assimilate (and hence become more canadian in terms of values, cultures, and identities). It is thought that this is a win win. For canadians, it provides social stability (similar practices, identities, languages, etc).
