Subculture
• A culture within a culture – collection of norms, values and beliefs, distinguished from the dominant culture
• Acts labelled deviant in one group may be perfectly acceptable in another
• Collective solutions to shared problems
• Assistance
- Social support for members
- Enhance self esteem
- Rationalizations of behavior/condition
• Counterculture – like a subculture but in opposition to larger culture
Terminology
• Sex assignment – biological gender
• Gender identity – internal sense of their own gender
• Gender expression – reflects gender identity (does not go with sexual orientation or gender assigned at birth)
• Transgender – biological gender does not line up with how they feel in their head
• Cisgender – sex assignment and gender identity line up
• Asexual – attracted to either (no sexual attraction at all)
• Pansexual – attracted to ANYONE
• Heteronormativity – belief that people fall into 1 or 2 genders (default)
• Homonormativity – gay men living in a city, rich (stereotype)
• Identity does NOT equal behavior
Sexual norms
• Sexual behavior is governed by norms that regulate socially acceptable practices
• We learn sexual behavior like we learn anything else – what is appropriate vs inappropriate

Deviation
• Sexual norms – one woman with one man, no premarital sex
• Negative reactions from the society if deviating
• Sexual deviance – drag queens, BDSM, premarital sex, bestiality
• Judgements of sexual deviation consider: (DeLamater, 1981)
1. Degree of consent (rape, violence, etc)
2. Identities of the participants (female:female or female:male)
3. Relationships between participants (already in relationship or cheating)
4. Act and conduct (what and how theyre doing it)
5. Setting and context
Social change
• Sexual Revolution led to an increased permissiveness concerning a number of sexual acts
• Causes – motivated by women, gay rights, drugs (mostly), women taking autonomy for their rights, being sexual
beings outside of marriages
