Lecture 3 (Margolis) Reading pg 118-133
-conflicts over motherhood and work has declined as millions of middle-class wives
have taken jobs and being employed has become a norm rather than an exception.
-though, not everyone approves of this. e.g. groups like the Moral Majority de-
mands for a return to ‘traditional family values’.
-most women are pleased to be living in an era in which they are free to take a job and
pursue a career, being recognized by their ability to bring in financial support to the fami-
-in 18th century, child rearing responsibilities are not concentrated on the mother specif-
-changes to today’s child rearing, Margolis argues it is moulded by changes in
the nature of the family and american economy.
-as women enter the labour force, ‘work’ was removed from the household, the family
became more isolated from the larger community, the need for education and skilled
children increased, and the birth rate declined.
-consequently, a decline of domestic production due several reasons:
-in the past, women could not devote fully to motherhood due to daily living es-
sentials (manufacturing still in home) but as manufacturing took place in the fac-
tory, women found themselves ‘freed up’ to spend more time on childcare
-absence of men in the home also shaped the american definition of mother-
-men was preoccupied with work hence, away from home. mothers had to
take up the child rearing responsibilities
-as industrialization took place, home and the place of work became separate.
-child-bearing became a very important job as it is a weighty mission of trans-
forming her children into the model citizens of the day.
-emphasis on motherhood increased as fertility among the middle class decreased.
-due to procreative imperative
-the promotion of cheap population growth by powerful elements in soci-
ety which benefit from the rearing of high quality children.
-also due to industrialization, higher demand of quality labour hence,
more nurturing and education mother needs to provide to their children.
-according to research, majority of societies other kin present in the household relieve
the mother of some of the burden of child-care.
