Social control lecture 7- gender basics: gender basics: Sex gender system: idea that in our society we have a binary system. There is also sexual behaviour doesn"t always equal sexual orientation. assumed linear relationship between these elements seen to be natural . Anything outside of this is seen as deviant through social control. Supported by our social structure, moderated by legal system, medical system, our own social relationships. This is where heteronormativity comes from as well. Lorber looks at gender as a processes, ranks these statuses unequally, ranking men above women. Gender as work divides work in private and public sphere, legitimating those in authority. if men weren"t ranked above women maybe this process wouldn"t be occurring. A source of inequality: doing gender: Gender as a routine methodical and recurring accomplishment. West and zimmerman see gender as being social, its reoccurring accomplishment, something that we constantly do , its an activity, not something you have but do.
