Stressors turning into stress is due to context: stress turning into distress is due to coping, context is social circumstances in which the stressor can occur. Psychologists think that everything can be a stressor, but there are large classes of things that have a similar effect: it"s not just random. Stressors are just possible problems whether or not it is a threat is determined by context. He used very extreme situations in his animals and were only in short term: brought into change in people"s lives changes in lives cause readjustment and that is the core issue of stress.
