Back stage: the actual way we really feel about any given situation. He was concerned with how we displayed or performed gender roles. How we signal what sex we are: ex. If you"re a female perform on the front stage as being a woman: we signal sex through gender roles and gender display. Masculinity and femininity = prototypes of essential expression.
