SOC101Y1 Lecture 1: Lecture 1
Document Summary
The study of the nature of knowledge (methods, validity and scope) Who says what, where does the information come from, question the validity of knowledge. Different people can experience the same thing in different ways = multiplicity of same empirical world. Social science = we need to make assumptions about what can be known about the social world. Science is only one way to know things. Most principles that govern life are argued upon. Learning from multiple sources is more efficient than only through experience (not all ways of knowing are equally valid and reliable) Social world is not static, it is dynamic. The aggregate does not negate the anecdotal and the anecdotal doesn"t negate the aggregate. Personal experiences can be completely different than the aggregate (the norm) and doesn"t make any of them less valid. *with any scientific knowledge we have to question. Reliability = getting the same outcome multiple times from different sources.
