Roles of families have a much more specialized and limited role in modern societies than they did in pre-industrial societies. Family life is smaller and limited portion in life than other institutions. In society there is a very big distinction in family life and non-family life, today, families are mainly residential units and units of consumption. Additionally, they produce and partly socialize children families have less control over the socialization of their children than back then. The revenue-raising productive work in society, and much of the socialization goes on outside of families. Many of the kinds of activities that families used to perform have been taken over by non-family or organizations in return for cash (childcare, cooking, etc)
