Socialization Week 4 Oct.3, 2012 Feral child-can’t develop normal relationships with people. Depending onn the age it was found at, different skills could be developed. Youtube-kid raised by the dog-feral child It is only a potential to become a human-not absolute. SOCIALIZATION is the process of learning culture and becoming aware of yourself as you interact with others. Biology has lot of impact on our development on human beings-provides the capacity to be social person. Our intelligence is largely inherent factor. EDUCATION is a process of socialization whereby knowledge and cultural know-how is transmitted. Darwin’ Evolutionary Theory 1)The characteristics of members of each species vary widely. More anxious ones will survive since they are more careful. 2)Species members with more adaptive characteristics are more likely to survive until reproduction. 3)Therefore, the species characteristics that endure are those that increase the survival chances of the species The Logic of Sociobiology-applied to humans 1. Identify a supposedly universal form of human behaviour. 2. Make up a story about why this behaviour increases survival chances. 3. Assert that the behaviour in question cannot be changed Men and women have different survival strategies. Women desire for one man and monogamy. Men have desire for polygamy and impregnate as many women as possible. –unconscious thoughts. It is written in our genes. Sociology argues that sociobiology is to simple. Since it does not take into account many factors. Fails to count for culture and institution, shapes sexual desire. 4 out of 5 men had either 1 or 0 partners For women it was 10% less than men Question the validity of self-response. Very small difference. Institution change the desires and habits. -if it not dictated by our genes, then how is it working? Culture pushes for it. Gender socialization. -being called a stud is good for male, but being called a slut is not good for women. Men face less consequences. Looking to culture, society, opportunity cost.
