People ignore disadvantaged, assuming they can transition into a better position. People"s awareness of their class is very weak. In any 2-quarter period, most people remain employed/unemployed. Lots of movement taking place in and out/within a labour force in any period of time. Movement between social classes which are conceived as being higher/lower. Upward mobility opportunities for advancement in society: most people stayed in same location/job that their parents were in, church was important for providing opportunites for upward mobility (provided education, latin) Correlation between good work ethic and getting ahead. Mobility in society is not driven by ambitious people. Structural mobility: made possible by creation of additional job positions: glass and hall: mobility between 1935-55 (sons doing better than fathers after wwii better jobs available, industrialized countries are upwardly mobile. Most upward mobility is due to structural expansion or growth: middle class benefits show the most mobility up/down, maintains advantage of highest income class.
