SOC200H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Likert Scale, Church Attendance, Syphilis
Document Summary
Abraham kaplan says that there are three classes of things that scientists study: simple observables: things that are simple to observe such as the color of an apple, indirect observables: observations that are more subtle such as observing that someone has checked off the box for female, and indirectly observing that their gender is female, constructs: theoretical creations that are based on observations but cannot be observed directly or indirectly such as a person"s iq. Guttman, likert and thurstone scales: both scales and indexes are ordinal measures of variables in that they both rank the order the units of analysis in terms of specific variables such as religiosity, alienation etc, a person"s rank on a scale or index of religiosity will give an indication of a person"s religiosity in comparison to other people, an index is constructed by accumulating scores assigned to individual indicators.
