Week 4 ­ Grabb and Guppy Chapter 8 Social Mobility ­ upward or downward movement of individuals or groups into different posistions in a  social hierarchy based on wealth, income, occupation, education, power, or any other scarce social resource Occupational Terms • Occupational standing is closely related to other behaviors and indices of general social standing • Women are peripheral to the occupational structure because of their interrupted employment  patterns, attachment to part time work, and family responsibilities • Marginal distribution of parents’ occupations is termed the occupational origin • marginal distribution of the person is known as the occupational destination (person being asked  is respondent, parent of that person is the origin Mobility • Mobility in society that exceeds that permitted by shifts in its occupational structure is known as
