As people age, often time need help: medical issues, nursing, shopping, house
work and transportation
There are 2 Sectors:
Informal care friends and family
formal sector providing care
I. Informal care from family and civil society
Most of the care don’t come from public services ( only complement help by
family members)
Estimate of 20% of adult population in North America give help unpaid help
with older who have problems with daily life activities
commonpartner/spouse most likely to jump in
and second children
Demography availability of help who is available in the social network
60% offering some sort of help in the family context are female daughters
more likely than sons.
There is some stereotypes issues husbands are more likely to suggest
additional help such as institutions
- Caregiver squeeze?
a) Longer life spans having longer life expectancy of women
increasing. More years of people dealing with chronic disease and
requirement of help
b) Smaller family size
c) More dual-income and households with divorcees time squeeze
going on both partners are working and more men living longer
