SOC250Y1 Lecture : Weber Christianity Phases
Document Summary
Today: introduce ideas to look at a particular case (christianity: two key phases: one is social origins or beginnings and the second looking at weber and protestant ethic) Weber"s main analytical approach= *first thing about his work that is important- he does not treat religion as an autonomous domain. He is interested to see how religion links up with other cultural practices- how is it connected with economics, politics etc: sought to establish the interconnections between economics, politics, war, religion. Etc. , as these interrelations shift and unfold in the course of shaping and driving human history. Weber s starting point: differing levels or degrees of religious aptitude or interest among individuals need to make a distinction between different levels of degrees of religious interest. He argued there was a continuum the term he used for the more demanding and intense side of the equation was what he called virtuoso or heroic religiosity.
