SOC250Y1 Lecture November 17 2010 The Historical Sociology of the World ReligionsLast week recapshift from animism to polytheism projection reflection polytheists were organized via kings on earthkings in heavenidea that gods and goddesses were ordered in a hierarchy of power and authority religious fear came to carry a political form or content earthly rulers justified authority closely on developing traditions of the pantheons of the gods and goddesses Today introduce ideas to look at a particular case Christianity two key phases one is social origins or beginnings and the second looking at Weber and protestant ethicMax Weber 18641920 One of the most important sociologists of religionWeber is historically variable and dynamic he would have opposed any sociological theory about what religion is or what it does he offers a historical comparative of the sociology of religion Webers main analytical approach first thing about his work that is important he does not treat religion as an autonomous domain He is interested to see how religion links up with other cultural practices how is it connected with economics politics etco Sought to establish the interconnections between economics politics war religion Etc as these interrelations shift and unfold in the course of shaping and driving human history Religion exerts a large importance on liferegulationreligion has a good amount of authorityhas a voice or say as to how things should happen in politics economics family relationshipsit is a social regulatoro The importance of religiosity determined systems of liferegulation for economics politics warfare art the erotic education and intellectual life etc Webers starting point differing levels or degrees of religious aptitude or interest among individualsneed to make a distinction between different levels of degrees of religious interest He argued there was a continuumothe term he used for the more demanding and intense side of the equation was what he called virtuoso or heroic religiosityfrom language of music used term virtuoso he is saying throughout human history you can identify a minority of people who go about their lives in intense spiritual involvement They are deeply concerned about human spiritual issues
