SOC265H1 WEEK 5 Gender and Heteronormativity, Gender in Sexual Negotiation Feb. 7 , 2013 1 Gender and Heteronormativity: Embedded in Social Organization Reinforcing gender as in institution, thus we are reinforcing gender inequality Families that confirm with gender inequality will influence their future generations Will women acting like men at the workplace have a problem or impact? What about those at work as CEOs, taking a career such as doctors, engineers… -In order to do that you need to be a man (the characteristics) -Is the change in the hierarchy of the institution? -Is changing personal behaviour and interaction can you change institutions? -Doing gender is about interpersonal relationships Why is it that women in society take care of children, why women tend to stay home when needed to? -Socialization, gender expectations, history that produced I. Conceptualizing Gender: from “Doing Gender” to Gender as a Principle of Social Organization (Systemic) A. Some interesting research 1.Kathleen Gerson, Hard Choices: Why women’s priorities changed between their 20s and 30s  Designed a study to sort out socialization, the choices that adults make (women and men make)  Late 60s early 70s: expected to be in the labour for the rest of their lives  Interviews 10 years later: what their priorities were, and what have you done from them to now o Career, paid work, doing well in the labour force o Family (i) The majority of women switched their priorities over time a. 70% highest priority building a family and having a relationship (once out of university) b. Either, good career not satisfied with family…or had a family but not enough economic resources or women, having a really good career, climbing up te social ladder, postponing having children - Was all the result of their experiences, what happened to them (labour force and personal life) c. Women determined to have a career job (not happening) - Part-time job, and more focused on their family - Their career was blocked (glass ceiling) - Good relationship, balance career was relationship…relationship was better (maybe partner had the ability to support them) - The economy had a huge influence on what women were doing (ii)We do because what happens to us, due to the way the labour market was organized (iii) Paths of least resistence 2.Kathleen Gerson, No Man’s Land: Why men’s priorities changed between their 20s and 30s  Autonomy (early 20s, the number one priority)  Breadwinning (better and easier for men to earn good money)  Children and family On the importance of experience, given social organization; “paths of least resistance”  Learning how the society is organized B. How society is organized around gender difference: the public/private separation; the division of work & responsibility in families; gender divisions in capitalist workplaces 1.The public sphere is seen more for a men 2.The private sphere for women  Families are organized around the social divide II.Heteronormativity A. Heterosexual, nuclear families: Privileged, and perhaps essential to this (capitalist)
