SOC356Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Supremacism, Computer-Mediated Communication, Canadian Human Rights Commission
Document Summary
Week 5: hier reading: the contemporary structure of canadian racial supremacism. Just as racism has been justified, rationalized, and or minimized in canada, so too has the presence of racial supremacist organizations. Organized racial supremacism is often dismissed as an america, and less commonly a european phenomenon. Cmc (computer mediated communication) and social action has tended to congregate around 2 theoretical assumptions. The first is forwarded by those who conceive of cmc tech as an instrument which unilaterally shapes individual and social behaviour. Proponents of direct- impact perspectives" assert that cmc technology exercises a direct and definitive impact on social process(es), in turn stimulating social behavioural change in a uniform manner. Conversely, and second, are the expositors of mediated impact perspectives. According to this approach, cmc tech is understood to provoke individual and or collective action, but it is argued that the impact of the introduction of new technologies is mediated rather than uni-directional.
