Urban Health Lecture October 3, 2012 Urbanism as a way of life (1938)  Large, dense cities are more heterogeneous  Negative effects of urbanism: o Families change; can’t just be linked to urbanization but things in the economy, culture, etc. but it is associated with it o Lower fertility rates; due to urbanization but also due to education and also peoples preferences o More social people and less socialized relations [interactions]  Positive effects of urbanism: o Modernizing effect on socialization o Tendency to view cities from a functionalist perspective Megalopolis  Affluence happened in the 20 century; a lot of growth
