Philosophy not a subject of study back then but a way of life: something that shaped worldview of a person. Religion in essence, an element of citizenship: part of your duty as a citizen, no one didn"t practice something, acts, rituals, events, festivals key elements of the religions of roman. Christianity was very popular, spread like wildfire in the empire: but many are doing so in basis of practice. Rise of asceticism - saw christians around them just doing what they have been told regardless of belief, thus they decided to live as they think christians should live: took it seriously. Judaism one of the legal religions of the empire: jesus lived in the context of being allowed to practice, but when people started following jesus = novelty. Christianity born when they wer ejoined by the gentiles. From 12 to 1 million followers growth of christian population.
