LEC02 WHAT IS MARXIST ANALYSIS - Karl Marx o German Philosopher, 1818-1883 o Tremendous influence around the globe  In economics, politics, and all social theory  Then and since o Regarded by some as the most influential ‗social thinker‘ of his time o Influenced all forms of interpretation o Communism o Material condition to which people themselves are born  Great shaping or forming in terms of how people view society and how they view themselves within it o Dealing in a polarized society  A lot of poor and concentration of wealth  If you lose your job, you might starve - What is the economic system behind media? o Advertising o Trying to make something very clear for why there is something being offered - Who owns, controls the media? o There are times where one company owns several brands - What role do the media play in society? o Decides what gets focused on o Media editorship is important in terms of what gets promoted o When things get attention, others get neglected  Ex. Front page of the newspaper o Conglomerate  Accumulating multiple companies and businesses through mergers, buyouts and takeovers  Brings together, owning, etc.  Particular likes and dislikes you‘d like to see or not see in the media o Associations, or not being related to at all o Things you see may not fully be from the free market, but there would be conglomerates that may manipulate the media - Are ideas spread or neglected by the media? o How often when looking in the newspaper there is a male youth with a weapon  Reminds us of violence and weapons in the hands of the youth o Media decided to take out and portray the middle east being a volatile place o Never even handed o Used to reinforce a certain kind of dialogue or perception o Not necessarily accurate o Once an idea is repeated over and over again, it becomes engraved in people‘s heads - What kinds of heroes are shown in the media? o Placements of the articles in the newspaper - What kind of demons? - What is the mode of production? o A reference to economy that refers to ‗the way things are produced‘ o Around the globe, and throughout history, there have been different ‗ways‘ that people have produced the needs of society  Hunting and gathering societies  Farming societies  Industrialized societies - ―In the social production which men carry on, they enter into definite relations that are indispensable and independent of their will; these relations of production correspond to a definite stage of development of their material powers of production. The totality of these relations of production constitutes the economic structure of reality--the real foundation, on which legal and political superstructures arise and to which definite forms of social consciousness correspond.‖ o Social production; replication of the society in which we live o For you to enter into any dialogue that is to do with trade or economics or anything in that manner, you are engaged in forming relationships with those around you  Not things you construct, but those that exist  Indispensible and not controllable by our will o Social production is anchored  How things are done  How things are arranged  How they are transferred  How it is shared/ passed  How people take part in things and in things bigger than themselves  Relates to what exists and what is the materiality of reality - ―The mode of production of material life determines the general character of the social, political and spiritual processes of life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being determines
