A work is an entity that exists in no single historical document (thomas. A work is the idea of a certain text and how it functions in society. In our contemporary historical moment, the availability of texts is unprecedented. Project gutenberg, e-books of texts that are no longer in copyright, google. Without quality editions, literary criticism cannot happen effectively. Took shakespeare texts and took out the naughty bits; thought this would produce a quality edition. British poet john clare"s texts were heavily edited in his lifetime--sometimes with his approval and sometimes not. He was uneducated so sometimes he would ask his editors to help him clean up his poems. In other instances, he really did not have much say. Should editors make poets like clare a slave to grammar and normative spelling. What qualifies as a quality edition or a useful edition depends on a number of factors.
