Even though we perceive digital as non- material, it could be material. Digital files are perceived as ephemeral (easy to lose and destroy), and are also perceived as insignificant or costless. Materiality: the physical medium used to store and convey text. Just like books can be studied as artefacts, so can computers. Texts are controlled by the devices which transmit them. Some forms that digital materiality could take: a usb drive, cd, dvd, blue ray, hard drive . Digital objects are not just what they appear to be, they are mediated to us by a screen, we tend to look at the screen, not the encoded subject at the core. All what is downloaded actually always exists; whether or not you delete it. When you delete a file from your computer, the space that file occupied is flagged as space available for reuse. Nsa recommends driving a tank over your hard drive.
