Heterosexuality Goes Public - Marriage is not a static concept – it has varied throughout cultures and histories - Female sexuality was historically deemed a problem, so marriage was a way of controlling that - Honeymoon became an object of mass consumption - Associated with travel, leisure, and increased disposable income - Made sexuality public - Depended on strict gender roles (and assumptions about male and female pleasure) - Role of “experts” - “Honeymoon shock” - An expression of heterosexual maturity - Problem of “don’t rape your wife” – men were allowed to do this, since women weren’t even thought to be capable of giving consent - Scripted – people had to follow a specific social honeymoon script - Role of popular and cultural representations - The honeymoon is considered vital to a healthy marriage, which is vital to the family
