The bicycle: lifestyle and class & environmentalism and elitism. In china, if you have a bicycle, you look poor because you can"t afford a car. Some europeans and north americans are trying to market really expensive bicycles to chinese people to prove that it is actually a health-conscious and environmentally-conscious option to transportation. Bicycling is both a status symbol and a lifestyle choice. Negotiation: a person could be sitting on a ,000 bicycle but someone could look at that bicycle and be unaware of its price and think that the other guy can"t afford a car. Thus, in order to understanding this sytem, you have to be a part of the community that uses this system. Who rides a bike for other than the fact that it"s cheaper? (usually middle class/upper middle class) Commuters who do it for other reasons than the price: people sick of traffic, hate the ttc, downtown people who are close to their place of work.
