A term which refers to the cultural artifacts from so called primitive people s: these groups include african art (sub-saharan), the aboriginal arts of, there is not typically used to describe chinese, islam or indians that are. Australia and other art of native people considered to be mainstream because they are considered to be developed art forms. Primitive art is seen as less refined and less skilled than our usual standards. In the modern asthetic the emphasis in sculpture is to have fine. Smooth lines whereas a primitive technique places importance on chopping: the use of an adze to chop/hack away at stone or wood leading to a non level, non smooth surface. Clearly not the intention because these pieces are very much finished. According to western ideals, we see things as unfinished or not well developed: they are perhaps trying to show realism.
