VIC224Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Human Billboard, Erich Fromm, Frankfurt School
Document Summary
For the next few weeks we will be looking at philsophies and ideologies: marxism, structuralism, semiotics, post-structuarlism, phenomenology, post-colonialism, modernism etc. Some theories are competing and contradict one another. Some aspects are like tinted sunglasses and by applying one theory to a set of objects will leave something out: no matter what, there will always be obscurity. Using more than one theory shows multidisciplinary approaches. Karl marx: objects as commodities: an early communist. Karl marx was a german philosopher and economist. He was exiled from france to london in 1849 where he met fredrich engels. Work in economics laid the foundation for current understanding of labour relation to capital. Human society moved forward through class struggle, progress in humanity: he predicted, falsely, that capitalism would have internal tensions that came from tension. would lead to self destruction, which, then would lead to socialism.
