Week ONE
What is criminology?
What cause crime, and how the society deals with it and reacts to it
Criminology is the body of knowledge regarding crime as a social phenomenon.
Criminology is an objective social science
Area of criminology inquiries:
The criminal law itself
Crime statistics (how measure, document crime)
Crime causation ( why ppl engage in crime) (micro- individual level, peer pressure)
(macro- society and social roots that cause crime, economy affect crime)
Victimology
The operation of criminal justice system (people treated equally, private and public
attorneys)
Crime or deviance:
Deviance (unusual and rare behaviour)
Uncommon behaviours (are all uncommon activities crime? Are all crimes
uncommon? drinking, marijuana)
Voluntary vs. involuntary behaviour ( prove intent)
Harmful vs. harmless behaviours (are all harmful behaviours crime, ex. Smoking)
The social context of behaviour
Definition of crime:
A crime is a violation of a law that has been formally established by the State.
State of rules in the name of society. Threat of punishment. Crime intentional
violation of criminal law without defence or excuse
