WDW151H1 Lecture 3: Migration and Immigration
Individual actions can have major social implications
○
Each neighbour that moved not only affected the neighbourhood they left, but
impacted the neighbourhood they joined --> like Global Migration Crisis
○
If each neighbour is content, segregated community --> but was not their
objective
○
Each piece preferred to be in a minority, nobody wanted segregated outcome,
but that is outcome they got based on individual preferences
○
Process: of segregation or aggregation (herding, people coming together)?
○
Spontaneous Transformation of Social Order
•
Public opinion polls showed that people preferred to live in integrated
communities
▪
But there were a lot of segregated communities --> explosive social /
political issue in USA
▪
Maybe people lie on public opinion polls?
▪
There is some other factor causing segregation (law)?
▪
Realized other kinds of social clustering, not just based on race -->
retirees in Florida, Young families in social clusters, gentrification moving
into particular area
▪
How social order transforms spontaneously, how does segregation
happen?
▪
go to neighbourhood and ask people why they've moved there
□
Qualitative:
▪
get census data, look at communities to determine which
communities are more integrated, which are segregated --> doesn't
tell people why segregation occurs, doesn't answer question
□
Quantitative:
▪
Forms a model of society --> known as Game Theory
▪
Maybe its not segregation but aggregation, people wanting to live
together with like-minded people
▪
Need a different approach to integrate communities
▪
Demonstrates "tipping", tipping in --> new neighbour moves into
community (tips social order in that community), and tipping out -->
moving out of community
▪
The entrance of a few minorities transforms the new community -->
causes some other minorities to leave, making room for others to move
in.
▪
Herding and tipping = homogeneous communities or "enclaves" (cosmos)
▪
Evolves spontaneously '
▪
Enclave: Area with a concentration of a particular ethnic or religious
group and a cluster of commercial and institutional activities associated
with this group
