Factory work was dangerous, hours were unregulated, and wages were low (only way to survive since other forms of work had been disrupted) In these growing urban areas, men and women found themselves required to identify as individuals. For women, they were still identified through their relationships to fathers and husbands. Women and men have different legal rights and privileges.
