What is the ideological work of the heteronormative nuclear family? (ideology is a system of ideas) "just as the patriarchs rule the family, the elites of the nation-state rule their citizens. " The ideology of the heteronormative family becomes a model for authority in the family and authority in the state. The ideology of the heteronormative family attaches moral authority to the heterosexual nuclear family. The ideology of the heteronormative family requires the regulation of female sexuality. The oma is preoccupied with the moral worthiness of applicants: women to remain in home, women to be self-sacrificing. Legally sanctioned heterosexual relations only sanctioned expression of desire. Burden of proof heavier than for men and always on women. All applicants required birth, marriage, death certificates, and obtaining these was often difficult/impossible for those born outside the country.
