W8 WDW370h Females in Conflict with the Law Early Perspectives  Goes back to the work of Lombroso: o Spoke abut the issue of female criminality but did not separate adults from youth/ most data collected from prison/ the women in prison were more traitorous and deviant then male in prison/ they more like men then the women in society o Misguided ideas of evolution and sexism  In 20 century most research tend to focus on deviant women/ most often sexual deviance and prostitution, focused on morality, poverty, and most of time focus on the fact that these women had a problem (moral, psychological…) [social structural factors were not considered)  Davis: prostitution is functional to society/ forms a safety to the family/ [now a days, really functional to men but not to women]  1970’s thing begin to change: Liberation Hypothesis  Adler and Simon A social structural explanation: [looked at national criminal stats and notice female crime youth and adult started to increased] o Taken as a given that official stats were accurate o Link pattern to other shift in the economy occurring at the same time (increasing of women participation in work force) and (more and more women involved in post secondary education) o Women were taking upon different roles and becoming liberated and getting out to the real world  so had more power and opportunity and led to more crime (liberation hypothesis o Critics: women in jail are not the one who had power, it was the women who had less power/ only took national stats into consideration and looking only at % change/ didn’t look at the fact that male crime was also increasing during the same period  Inductive (start with research and conclude a theory) to deductive (start with theory and then do research) Power Control Theory  Focus on kids (12 to 16 years old) late 70’s and early 80’s  Data collected from high schools and handed out surveys/  Women position in society were changing and manifested in labor market and in the house hold/ and proposed two types of family *patriarchal family” home situation where mothers are at home and taking care of kids, part time in working market], [egalitarian families: different roles for men and women, mother working outside of the home as well as fathers] so the change in work role had an effect on youth crime  In patriarchal household: girls are more monitored, and couldn’t do what they brothers could do/ the ides that the girls will get married to a guy that going to provide from them/ as a result they weren’t exposed to the kind of situations that would get them into trouble  The egalitarian family: because both parents are working, females has different pressures on them/ don’t have to learn how to cook or clean, but to go out and get a
