BIOL 329 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Biological Specificity, Mutation, Haida Gwaii
Lect 35
Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus): largest mammal to have ever lived.
North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica): calcified structures on face.
Baleen whale communication: echolocation, prey location, communication, navigation,
laryngeal projections.
Active space: area that signal can be detected and decoded by receiver. Individual with
conspecific or individual with self.
Noise requirements and quiet zones being implemented.
Fishing success of black vs white bear – difference during daylight. White bear has twice the
potential success.
Sell’s ido: light refrated fro the horizo ito a 96o oe. 2-2.5 times reduced
evasiveness to the white bear in Goldstream.
If the Kerode ear is ore suessful hy do’t they ade up a larger portio of the ear
population?
Expect white bear elsewhere in north Pacific drainages where salmon are common.
1) Grizzly bear predation and wolf predation (both kill black bears – would kill Kermode bear
which is highly visible)?
2) Competitive exclusion of black bear by grizzly bears on mainland salmon streams (low 15N
signatures in black bears). However,... Haida Gwaii has many salmon stream, no grizzlies, no
wolves, no white bears. Mutation at the melanocortin 1 receptor gene has not appeared...
because of logging?
Logging: 300-500 year period where salmon are unable to return to where they previously
spawned e.g. on Gribbel Island.
Conservation of the Kermode Bear: 1950-60: 4352 kg/y vs 1990-200: 838 kg/yr. Enough to
support 1 bear. 80% reduction in the major source of protein for bears. Each bear needs 500
salmon.
