To modern philosophers interested in animal welfare animals deserve moral (ethical) consideration if and only if they are self-aware and possess the capacity to feel pain. Argued that mathematically based knowledge of the world is possible. Believed women, irish, blacks did not possess self awareness or the ability to feel pain and suffering. Only being with a soul could feel pain. Dissections of live dogs cries of pains thought of as a cough" or non-pain related response. Wollstonecraft (1792): women were not inferior to males and should have equal rights. Singer argued that women were like brutes" dogs, horses and should not be given rights. Thoreau (1840): society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Salt (1894): argued for a ban on hunting. He argued there was no point in claiming rights for animals if those rights were subordinated for human desire, took issue with the idea that the life of a human might have more moral worth.
