Cold war term goes back to medieval period. George orwell qualified the cold war as a peace that is not peace in his essay you and the atomic bomb. This term was also used in the soviet union, but not in the same way as in the us. Still, he explained the origins of the term as coming from the french term. Cold war : intense rivalry for economical and political power and influence. Each side tries to obtain military superiority or at least to block the other. It can be thought as a race at first. Struggle for superiority is often referred as a zero-sum game : a gain on one side is a loss of same importance on the other. Both sides had nuclear power and weapons which could destroy the other country and kill most of human population, could have created a nuclear winter : peace is impossible yet war is improbable .
