Document Summary

Relative various parts of the body with respect to each other. Equilibrium is state at which all forces acting on the body are balanced. Mechanical stability = centre of pressure must be within base of support. Maintain posture on moving surface (ie. surface moves backwards like bus our body tilts forward) or (when people fall they extend base of support to capture centre of mass similar to cane). Equilibrium system: proprioceptive information from joints and neck, soles of feet (touch), inner ear (vestibular), eyes (vision, focal and peripheral). Harder to fall over with a cane because greater stability. Centre of pressure is actual point (on the ground) whereas centre of mass is theoretical: must maintain steady position in the presence of gravity. To be able to do anything must maintain steady stance. In seated or standing: generate responses that anticipate movement deal with changing world ie. on a bus, must be adaptive.
