HSTR 230A Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Eastern Canada, Responsible Government, Lower Canada
Document Summary
November 27, 2015: compare charles major"s letter to some of the letter that were seen in chapter 8. Thought everyone was really poor, people were living in slums, people came to bc to strike it rich and that didn"t seem to be happening. People weren"t getting paid enough to sustain living. Didn"t think that the gold rush was worth people moving there, thought it was a huge waste of time. Paints a bad picture of british columbia because he is frustrated with the state there, maybe telling his family to not come here. Wanted to clarify that the gold rush wasn"t as amazing as people thought it was, trying to give a clear picture of the situation. However, he could be lying about the situation to keep the gold rush under raps. Gives specific reasons of what the cost of living is, and how living in british columbia people aren"t making enough.
