Became communist after reading the works of ho chi min. Became a founding member of the indo-china communist party that was run by ho chi. Studying of vitamins history stimulated his growing nationalist and grew his hatred of both france and japan. Although they were communist, they were also extremely nationalist. Was self educated about strategy and tactics. Guerilla warfare = weak country with no military power can stand up against a larger country with powerful weapons. Vietnam independence league (viet minh) set up by ho chi min. Because giap had some knowledge of military strategy, he assumed responsibility in leading warfare against the japanese in tonkin. When the japanese surrendered, ho chi min immediately declared a independent. Vietnamese government giap was made chancellor of defence.
