In southern germany, bureaucrats were able to build their careers by persecuting witches. Witch finders arose as a professions, but had to be wary of lex talionis, especially in protestant nuremberg. Rulers could build a reputation by persecuting witches, also showed what good. Julius echter, prince bishop of wurzburg: dedicated to appearing deeply committed to catholicism. Banned protestants from holding office: generous patron of baroque architecture, founded a hospital, the juliusspital. At the time, hospitals are places for anyone in need, not just for the sick. Housed orphans, the very old and frail, and travelers. Architecture reflects julius"s preoccupation with order/structure: founded university of wurzburg, jesuits were given control, 1573: became prince bishop at a very young age appointed/elected. Wasn"t even a priest, just very privileged this tradition was very criticized by protestants and catholics alike. Height of the counter reformation: as a good catholic, echter wanted to be personally involved in the care of the needy.
