Study of characteristics of initial attraction with 120 individuals in same-sex relationships. Most important: agreeableness (i. e. kindness, supportiveness, consideration, understanding) Least important: status (i. e. potential for a good job, security, success) Physical attractiveness fell between agreeable and status. Mere exposure effect: repeated exposure leads to greater attraction. Attraction to people of similar age, ethnicity, religious views and education. Refers only to having no or sonly a short relationship. Race is the main homophily characteristic (90% of these relationships were with partners who shared the same coloured skin) Does not necessarily have the same effect on long term relationships (less important quality in long term relationships: makes us question social construction and how we separate ourselves from dating due to them. Matching phenomenon: tendency to choose people whose social value matches one"s own perceived worth . Reinforcement theory: tendency to choose partners who provide reinforcement or rewards.
