Abbot suger (1081-1151) was a french abbot, historian, royal advisor and architectural theorist/ patron. Suger states in his autobiographical writing that he came from a humble background. In 1091, at age 10, he becomes an oblate in the abbey of st denis. Oblate (from the latin oblatus someone who has been offered ) had various meanings in the medieval church. Usually, it refers to a child who was given to a monastery/convent at the age of ten. The child could leave the foundation at the time of puberty, but most remained and became monks/nuns. Oblate can also refer to individuals who chose to affiliate themselves with a monastic house or convent without becoming a monk or nun. In 1106, suger became secretary to the abbot of st denis. In 1107, he becomes provost of berneval in normandy; in 1109, provost of toury. Suger"s reputation as an effective administrator is growing! In 1118, suger becomes king louis vi"s ambassador.
