LECTURE 13 – June 27th
6) Strategic Control: the set of strategies that one will consciously adapt to cope with the
perceived stress effects
- The individual responds to the perceived or understood level of stress, not the stressor per se
Stress: the good, the bad and the ___________
Stress-induced immune dysfunction: the implications for health
Psychoneuroimmunology: how the immune system communicated bidirectionally with the
central nervous system and endocrine systems – and how these interactions have an impact
upon health (can experience stress, something can be stress / stressor)
Stressor: a stimulus that activated the hypothalamic – pituitary – adrenal (HPA) axis and/or the
sympathetic nervous system to adapt physiologically to deal with a threat.
When events or environmental demands exceed an individual’s PERCIEVED ability to
cope
Chronic stressors often are deleterious to immune functioning
Brief stressors (<2 hours) might enhance some aspects such as cells from lymphoid
organs to the peripheral blood and skin
Public speaking increase natural-killer-cell activity and some types of leukocytes
(glossophobia – fear of public speaking)
Stressors: increase susceptibility to infectious agents, influence the severity of the infectious
disease, diminish strength of immune response to vaccines, reactivate latent herpesviruses,
slow wound healing.
Herpesvirus infections are linked to signifivant pain and suffering – stressors may
reactivate latent herpesviruses
Chronic inflammation may be a contributing factor of all cancer cases
Increase production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are associated with age-related
diseases
Anxiety and depression modulate the antibody and t-cell responses to vaccines against
infection with Hep B and rubella
