Final Ideas – Health and Healthcare
When confronted with a choice between simple or complex solutions, we tend to favour
the complex.
In the USA, the vast majority of National Institutes of Health are devoted to
technological interventions.
oGenerally, for physical health
oECT – electro convulsive therapy (intractable depression, last resort)
Part of the problem is that we think that behaviour change is easy to achieve. Patient
advice or simple patient education rarely achieves its goal
o80% of lifestyle changes that are recommended by health practitioners are
ignored by patients. (Homeopath/Naturopath/Chinese & Western medicine)
Little attention to the study of cognitive and social outcomes in cancer survivors
Women live longer than men in most developed countries, women experience poorer
self-reported outcomes during the years they are alive.
Areas of ongoing controversy in Canada:
One-tier / two-tier healthcare delivery
oUniversal healthcare doesn’t cover dispensing fees for medication
oPrivate healthcare MRI costs $800-$1200, or you wait upwards of a year
Abortion – pro-life / pro-choice
oThere is now a further restraint (200ft) zone outside the family clinic in View
Royal that offers abortions. This is to prevent protestors.
Drugs & alcohol – legalization of marijuana (October 17th)
Gun control – 21 million guns in Canada
oNuance of indigenous vs. non-indigenous as indigenous individuals are more
likely to be the target of gun violence
Discrimination
