PSYC 336 Lecture 9: June 17 & 18
Document Summary
Peer groups: increase in importance of the peer group- spend more time in company of peers than previous generations. Due to changes in workplace and population demographics (single-parent families and them working etc. ; like a cruise-ship shape now (not rst nation- more like pyramid)) Due to age-graded educational institutions- peer groups are more narrowly de ned age-segregated (before & after care 7-7); spend a lot of time with the same people. In us 2-6 million children return home after school w/ no adults present. Due to rapid growth in teenage population (american data- hispanic) Academic achievement is valued more by parents than by adolescents. Peers are more likely to pressure adolescents not to use drugs or to engage in sexual activity (early) Peers are more likely to pressure adolescents to use alcohol. Peer groups may be seen by some as more important than in previous generations- especially in industrialized communities.
