Document Summary
Eleven developmental tasks associated w/ the adolescent transition: elements of the overall sense of self. 1. the adolescent must adjust to a new physical sense of self. Puberty is marked by sudden rapid growth in height/weight. As an infant sense of self is the body. Language changes as child gets old (from 3rd person to 1st/2nd person) Young adolescent often becomes focused on his/her body. Females go through puberty earlier than men: evolutionarily adaptive (kids) Body dysmorphia: so concerned w/ body"s appearance that they try to radically change it or fail to adapt. 2. the adolescent must adjust to new intellectual abilities. Increases in ability to think about the world. Begin to recognize and understand abstractions (love, friendship, sharing ) 4th stage: formal operations (logic) (if a bigger than b and b bigger than c than a bigger than c etc. ) Problem seek as well as problem solve. 3. the adolescent must adjust to increased cognitive demand at school.
