SOCI 100B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Randall Collins, Friedrich Engels, Gender Dysphoria
Document Summary
Sex: is a determination of male/female according to a set of socially agreed-upon biological criteria. A child"s sex is assigned at birth and is largely based upon the appearance of external anatomy. Gender: are the social distinctions between masculinity and femininity. This creates a false dichotomy in that neither is an absolute are socially constructed. Cisgender: describes people who are not transgender (i. e. people who identify with their assigned gender at birth). Cisgender people often do not have to think about their gender. Gender non-conforming: describes people whose gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity. Example: a tom boy pushes feminine boundaries. Gender queer: is someone who wants to live in a gender other than the one assigned to them at birth, or, contests gender itself. Queer theory states that you are multiple. You will be different 5 years from now than you were 5 years ago.
