Document Summary

In 1946, the world health organization defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This definition highlights what we referred to today as the social determinants of health: example: gender, minority status, income, etc. A great deal of research confirms that the richer you are on average, the healthier you are. Why would this be the case: income and social status. Premise: health improves the more money you make because you have safe housing, can afford high quality food and enjoy various recreational/social activities. Evidence: low-income canadians die younger and suffer more illnesses than wealthier. Premise: support from family, friends, and communities lead to improved health. Do you have 10,000 acquaintance but few friends: one u. s. study found that more social contacts a person has, the lower their rates of premature death. All relates back to being able to ask for help: education and literacy.
