Chapter 63: the science and politics of polar. Learning intentions: to examine how the problems that scientific inquiry is focused on may ignore or contribute to more pressing issues. Nation states are laying claim to the ocean floor under which a significant amount of the world"s remaining known fossil fuels are said to exist. Law of the sea (unclos), nation states have an exclusive economic zone" that extends 200 nautical miles off of their coast lines. Unclos allows countries to extend the exclusive zone if it demonstrates that the continental shelf it is sitting on extends further than 200 nautical miles. Russia, the us, denmark, norway, and canada agreed to cooperatively pursue claims through. The greenland and west antarctica ice sheets contain 75% of the world"s fresh waters, enough to raise sea levels by tens of meters.
